Limitations of BMI in Health Assessment
While BMI provides an efficient population-level benchmark, it has recognized physiological limitations:
- Athletes & Bodybuilders: Dense lean muscle mass elevates body weight, often resulting in an "overweight" or "obese" BMI score despite very low body fat percentages.
- Elderly Individuals: Age-related muscle atrophy (sarcopenia) can mask unhealthy visceral adiposity in older adults with "normal" BMI numbers.
- Fat Distribution: BMI does not distinguish between subcutaneous fat and visceral fat stored around abdominal organs, which carries greater metabolic risk.
